A group of Catholic lay faithful established the Komarock Shrine in the early 1990s, modeling it after the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto in France where it is believed that the Virgin Mary appeared to a young girl named Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. The group was inspired by the story of Bernadette Soubirous and dedicated the shrine to the Virgin Mary.

The shrine attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, especially during the annual pilgrimage that takes place on February 11th, the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes. The pilgrims come from different parts of Kenya and other neighboring countries, and they participate in prayer, Eucharistic celebrations, confession, and other devotional practices.
