Angama Mara is a luxury safari lodge located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley overlooking Kenya’s Maasai Mara game reserve. The Maasai Mara is one of the most famous and popular wildlife reserves in Africa, known for its vast open plains, abundance of wildlife, and the annual wildebeest migration.

Location

Angama Mara is located in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, which is in southwestern Kenya, close to the border with Tanzania. The lodge sits on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, overlooking the Maasai Mara, one of the world’s most famous wildlife reserves.

The lodge is situated on the site where the iconic movie “Out of Africa” was filmed, and its design pays tribute to the movie’s romantic vision of Africa.

Angama Mara camps

The lodge has two camps, each with 15 luxury tents that offer stunning views of the Mara below. The tents are spacious and stylishly furnished, with large beds, en-suite bathrooms, and private decks.

Game drives

Angama Mara offers two game drives per day, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. Experienced guides will take you through the park in open-sided safari vehicles. During the drive, you will see animals such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest.

Hot air balloon safaris

This is a unique and unforgettable experience that will allow you to see the Maasai Mara from a completely different perspective. You’ll fly over the savannah and have the opportunity to see the wildlife from above. After the flight, you’ll enjoy a champagne breakfast in the bush.

Walking safaris

For a more intimate and immersive experience, Angama Mara offers guided walking safaris. You’ll walk through the bush with an experienced guide, learning about the local flora and fauna and getting a different perspective on the wildlife.

Maasai village visits

You’ll have the opportunity to visit a traditional Maasai village and learn about the culture and way of life of the Maasai people. Also you can participate in activities such as beading, spear throwing, and dancing.

Photography

The Maasai Mara is a photographer’s paradise as well as Angama Mara offers photography workshops and equipment rentals. This will help you capture the perfect shot.

Bush breakfasts and sundowners

Enjoy a gourmet breakfast in the bush or a cocktail as you watch the sunset over the savannah.

Spa treatments

After a day of safari activities, unwind with a massage or other spa treatment at the Angama Mara spa.

How to get there

  1. By air: The easiest and most convenient way to get to Angama Mara is by air. There are several daily flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the Angama Mara airstrip, which is a 15-minute drive from the lodge. The flight takes approximately 45 minutes, and you’ll have stunning aerial views of the Maasai Mara.
  2. By road: If you prefer to drive, it’s possible to reach Angama Mara by road. The journey from Nairobi takes approximately 5-6 hours, and the lodge can arrange for a private vehicle and driver to pick you up from the airport or your hotel. The road trip takes you through the Great Rift Valley and past several small towns and villages.
  3. By helicopter: For a truly unforgettable experience, you can arrange for a helicopter transfer from Nairobi to Angama Mara. The flight takes approximately 1 hour, and you’ll have stunning views of the Kenyan landscape along the way.
